DIBENZO(A,I)PYRENE Usage And Synthesis
Uses Dibenzo[a,i]pyrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) with potent carcinogenic activity. Dibenzo[a,i]pyrene was shown to induce DNA adduction, tumorigenicity as well as Ki-ras oncogene mutations in strain A/J mouse lung. Dibenzo[a,i]pyrene has been shown to be present in cigarette smoke condensate and in automobile exhaust gas in small quantities.
General Description Colorless solid. Water insoluble.
Air & Water Reactions Insoluble in water.
Reactivity Profile Vigorous reactions, sometimes amounting to explosions, can result from the contact between aromatic hydrocarbons, such as DIBENZO(A,I)PYRENE, and strong oxidizing agents. They can react exothermically with bases and with diazo compounds. Substitution at the benzene nucleus occurs by halogenation (acid catalyst), nitration, sulfonation, and the Friedel-Crafts reaction.
Health Hazard Inhalation of material may be harmful. Contact may cause burns to skin and eyes. Inhalation of Asbestos dust may have a damaging effect on the lungs. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Some liquids produce vapors that may cause dizziness or suffocation. Runoff from fire control may cause pollution.
Fire Hazard Some may burn but none ignite readily. Containers may explode when heated. Some may be transported hot.
