The coldest liquid on earth (-269°C), Helium is used to cool the magnets used in MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and obtain high-quality images. This application is also found in fundamental research, where Helium is used to cool NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) superconductor magnets and particle accelerators such as CERN’s Large Hadron Collider.
Helium gas is used with Oxygen in diving tanks to prevent the narcotic effect of Nitrogen in deep waters.
