Introduction:
The sodium salt of pantoprazole is obtained as an almost white to off white, crystalline powder. Pantoprazole sodium—a substituted benzimidazole derivative—is an irreversible proton pump inhibitor and was developed for the treatment of acid-related gastrointestinal disorders. As with other drugs of its class (e.g., omeprazol or lansoprazole), pantoprazole reduces gastric acid secretion through inhibition of the portion on the gastric parietal cell. The chapter discusses its physical properties such as ionization constants, solubility characteristics, and partition coefficient. It also presents various method of analysis of this drug such as compendial tests, electrochemical analysis, spectroscopic analysis, and chromatographic methods of analysis. The chapter concludes with a discussion on its biological properties such as activity, toxicity, and safety.
Useage:
Pantoprazole is used for short-term treatment of erosion and ulceration of the esophagus caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease. Initial treatment is generally of eight weeks' duration, after which another eight week course of treatment may be considered if necessary
Pantoprazole Sodium Sesquihydrate is a medicie which is used in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, prevention of duodenal ulcers linked to NSAID therapy in patients at risk, prevention of the relapse of oesophagitis.
