Methionine also known as DL-Methionine is a component of animal protein and the only sulfur-containing amino acid among essential amino acids. It is involved in the transfer of methyl groups and the synthesis of epinephrine, choline and creatine in the body, as well as the metabolism of phospholipids in the liver.
DL-Methionine is white or light gray crystal or powder crystal. It is slippery to the touch, with a fishy odor and faint sweetness, and a pungent odor specific to sulfur-based compounds on close smell. Soluble in water, soluble in dilute acid, dilute alkali, insoluble in 95% ethanol.

Function 

In medicine
It can be used as the main component of amino acid infusion and compound amino acids, and also used for synthesizing medicinal vitamins and for producing liver-protective preparations by using its anti-fatty liver effect.
 

In food
It is used for amino acid fortification of food and processing of food health products, and can be used as nutritional supplements, and because of its special odor, it is only used in fish cake products.

In the feed industry
Methionine has the largest amount and is used as a nutritional fortification of feeds and as a feed additive to make up for the balance of amino acids. 60% of the varieties of amino acid nutritional feed additives are methionine, 30% are lysine and about 10% are other amino acids.
