Function of Glutathione

1, Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide that contains unusual peptide bonds between the amino group of cysteine (by attachment to the normal peptide bond of glycine) and the carboxyl group of the glutamic acid side chain. It is an antioxidant that prevents damage to important cellular components caused by reactive oxygen species such as free radicals and peroxides.

The 2 thiol group is a reducing agent present in animal cells at a concentration of about 5 mM. Glutathione reduces the disulfide bond formed in the cytoplasmic protein to cysteine by acting as an electron donor. In this process, glutathione is converted to its oxidized form of glutathione disulfide (GSSG), also known as glutathione.

3, Glutathione exists almost completely in its reduced form because the enzyme that reduces its oxidative form, glutathione reductase, is constitutively active and inducible under oxidative stress. In fact, the ratio of intracellular reduced glutathione to oxidized glutathione is often used as a measure of cytotoxicity.
