Description

Loperamide is the generic form of the brand-name drug Imodium, a medication used to treat diarrhea.

Imodium works by slowing down the movement of the gut. This decreases the number of bowel movements and makes stool less watery.

Imodium may also be used to decrease the amount of discharge in patients who have undergone an ileostomy(a procedure to move waste out of the body when the colon or rectum is not working properly) or to treat people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Biological Activity High affinity μ -opioid receptor agonist with peripheral selectivity (K i values are 2, 48 and 1156 nM for μ -, δ - and κ -opioid receptors respectively). Antidiarrhoeal and antihyperalgesic agent. Also a Ca 2+ channel blocker; at low micromolar concentrations it blocks broad spectrum neuronal HVA Ca 2+ channels and at higher concentrations it reduces Ca 2+ flux through NMDA receptor operated channels.

 

How it Works

Loperamide hydrochloride causes the activity within the intestines to slow down. It also alters the movement of both electrolytes and water through the bowels. According to Drugs.com, it may take as many as 48 hours for the medicine to control diarrhea symptoms.

 

 

Side Effects

  1. Loperamide hydrochloride often causes dry mouth, which can be alleviated by chewing gum or eating hard candy. Other side effects include constipation, sleepiness and dizziness.
  2. Some individuals may have an allergic reaction to loperamide hydrochloride, which may manifest as a severe rash, fever, sore throat or continued diarrhea
