Mandelic acid, also known as bitter amygdalic acid, is a white rhombic flake crystal. Melting point is 119 ℃. Soluble in hot water, ether and isopropyl alcohol, insoluble in ethanol. Overexposure may cause discoloration and decomposition. It can be prepared by benzaldehyde and dibromoacetophenone. Used in organic synthesis, it is a special reagent for determination of zirconium.
