Iron dextran is a dark brown,slightly viscous liquid complex of ferric hydroxide dextran fintravenous intramuscular use.Iron dextran is uesed fthe treatment of piglets other animals with iron deficiency.Iron is essential to the formation of hemoglobin to the fuction formation of other heme nonheme compounds.Untreated depletion of iron stores leads to iron-dedicient erythropoiesis,in turn, to iron deficiency anemia.

After iron dextran is injected.the circulating iron is removed from the plasma by cells of the reticuloendothelial system,which spilt the complex into its componts of iron dextran.The iron is immediately bound to the available protein moieties to form hemosiderin of ferritin.the physiological forms of iron,to a lesser extent to transferrin.This iron which is subject to physiological control replenishes hemoglobin depleted iron stores.

The majportion of intramuscular injections of iron dextran is absorbed within 72 hours;most of the remaining iron is absorbed over the ensuring 3 to 4 weeks.
