• What is microcrystalline cellulose

Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a free-flowing, extremely fine, short rod or powdery porous particle of natural cellulose that is hydrolyzed to the limit polymerization degree (LOOP) by dilute acid. The color is white or nearly white. Odorless, tasteless, particle size is generally 20 ~ 80 Lm, the ultimate degree of polymerization (LODP) in the 15 ~ 375; not fibrous and highly fluid. It is insoluble in water, dilute acid, organic solvents and oils. It partially dissolves and swells in dilute alkali solution. It has high reaction performance in carboxymethylation, acetylation and esterification. Due to its special properties such as low degree of polymerization and large specific surface area, microcrystalline cellulose is widely used in medicine, food, cosmetics and light chemical industries.

• Function & Application of microcrystalline cellulose:

For formulation development, it can be applied in a wide variety of oral solid dosage forms, including tablets, capsules, sachets, pellets and others.

MCC is widely used in diverse pharmaceutical processes, like wet granulation, dry granulation or direct compression. MCC grades with low moisture-content are especially useful for application with moisture sensitive APIs.
Microcrystalline cellulose has high compactability properties, meaning that strong tablets can be made at low forces. These low forces can increase life of tooling during tableting step in production, even when the proportion of active ingredient within a tablet is high. In addition, tablets containing MCC, can be made to disintegrate readily when a superdisintegrant, is used, thus maximizing the potential for drug bioavailability. Combined together with various directly compressible lactose (DCL) grades (granulated, anhydrous, spray dried), MCC exhibits improved functional properties which can be useful for direct compression applications
