It plays an important role in the preparation of 6-acetyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine by reacting with 2-piperidone. It serves as a protecting group used in solid phase peptide synthesis.

Boc-anhydride is widely used for the introduction of the acid-labile Boc-protecting group in organic synthesis. It is extensively used for the protection of amino groups in the synthesis of amino acids, alkaloids, and peptides. Boc-anhydride reacts rapidly and cleanly with the only by-products being carbon dioxide and t-butanol. It is an efficient tert-butoxycarbonylating agent for alcohols and thiols.
