1. It is used for the induction and maintenance treatment of immunodeficiency patients (including AIDS patients) complicated by cytomegalovirus retinitis.
2. For the prevention of cytomegalovirus infection in patients receiving organ transplantation and for the prevention of cytomegalovirus disease in AIDS patients with positive cytomegalovirus serotest.

Ganciclovir' is an antiviral medication used to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections. A prodrug form with improved oral bioavailability (valganciclovir) has also been developed.Ganciclovir was approved for medical use in 1994.

Ganciclovir is an acyclic nucleoside analog of 2′-deoxyguanosine. Its chemical structure is similar to acyclovir except that it has an additional-CH 2 OH group. Active against cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections, ganciclovir is employed for the treatment of CMV retinitis in immunocompromised patients and is administered to transplant patients at risk for CMV retinitis. It can be administered either orally or intravenously, with the duration of treatment depending on the degree of immunosuppression. Dose reduction is recommended for those with renal function impairment or on hemodialysis.
