Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is a nucleotide derived from ribose and nicotinamide.Like nicotinamide riboside, Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is a derivative of niacin, and humans have enzymes that can use NMN to generate nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). In mice, NMN enters cells via the small intestines within 10 minutes converting to NAD+ through the Slc12a8 NMN transporter. 

Because NADH is a cofactor for processes inside mitochondria, for sirtuins, and for PARP, Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) has been studied in animal models as a potential neuroprotective and anti-aging agent. Dietary supplement companies have aggressively marketed NMN products claiming those benefits. Doses of up to 500 mg was shown safe in men in a recent human study.

Nicotinamide mononucleotide appears to be absorbed into cells through a molecular transporter embedded in the cell surface. Being smaller than NAD+, the Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) molecule may be absorbed more efficiently into cells. NAD+ cannot easily enter the body because of the barrier presented by the cell membrane. The membrane has a waterless space which  prevents ions, polar molecules, and large molecules from entering without the use of transporters. It was once thought that NMN must be altered before entering cells but new evidence suggests that it can enter cells directly via an NMN-specific transporter in the cellular membrane.
