Berberine is a naturally occurring alkaloid that is found in the roots, stems, rhizomes, or bark of a variety of plants like prickly poppy, tree turmeric, goldenseal, yellowroot, barberry, Oregon grape, Chinese Goldthread, yerba mansa, and the amur cork tree. It has a long history, having been used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine primarily to promote healthy gastrointestinal function. Berberine HCl may also serve as an effective antifungal and antibiotic.
