Etravirin may be used in combination with other antiretrovirals in adult HIV-1-infected patients who develop resistance after initial antiretroviral
treatment. 

Etravirin is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). It binds directly to HIV-1
reverse transcriptase and blocks RNA - and DNA-dependent DNA polymerase activity by destroying the enzyme catalytic site.  Etravirin does not
inhibit human α, β and γ DNA polymerases.
