Cyproheptadine hydrochloride is a kind of pipecolic antihistamines,it can compete with histamine released from the

organization for H1 receptor on effector cells , thereby it can prevent the onset of an allergic reaction, and release

histamine-induced spasm and congestion effects, this product has a strong H1 receptor antagonism, its anti-histamine

effect is stronger than chlorpheniramine, promethazine . There are mild to moderate anti-serotonin effects and

anticholinergic effects. In addition, there is a stimulate appetite effect, and weight gains after a certain time.

Application & Function

(1). Cyproheptadine is used to treat allergic reactions (specifically hay fever).[6] It is also used to treat vasomotor mucosal

edema, including vasomotor rhinitis and edema of the throat.

(2). It has shown effectiveness in the treatment of nightmares, including those related to post-traumatic stress disorder.

(3). It has been used in the management of moderate to severe cases of serotonin syndrome, a complex of symptoms

associated with the use of serotonergic drugs, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and monoamine oxidase

inhibitors), and in cases of high levels of serotonin in the blood resulting from a serotonin-producing carcinoid tumor.

(4) .It can also be used as a preventive measure against migraine in children and adolescents.

In Australia this is the only indication for which cyproheptadine is subsidised by the PBS.

(5). It can relieve SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction and drug-induced hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
