Salic acids are nine-carbon carbohydrate α-keto acids that have many important biological functions, including cell-cell recognition and host-pathogen interactions. N-Acetylneuraminic acid (NANA) is the most abundant sialic acid and is found in bacteria as well as in eukaryotic cells. The pathways for NANA synthesis and metabolism in bacteria differ from those used in eukaryotic cells. This sialic acid is an essential component of human brain gangliosides and sialylated glycoproteins.

N-Acetylneuraminic acid is a sialic acid nine-carbon monosaccharide commonly found in glycoproteins on cell membranes and in glycolipids such as gangliosides in mammalian cells. Studies suggest that N-Acetylneuraminic acid is useful biologically in neurotransmission, leukocyte extravasation, viral or bacterial infections and carbohydrate-protein recognition. It is believed that N-Acetylneuraminic acid, a negatively charged, non-reducing sugar, is more difficult to analyze directly. One method for its detection in serum is to cleave pyruvic acid from the molecule via N-Acetylneuraminic acid aldolase followed by colorimetric detection.

N-Acetylneuraminic acid is useful biologically in neurotransmission, leukocyte extravasation, viral or bacterial infections and carbohydrate-protein recognition. Neu5Ac is used to study its biochemistry, metabolism and uptake in vivo and in vitro. Neu5Ac is used in the development of nanocarriers.
