Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance, which is found in all cells of the body. It is produced in the liver, but can also be found in some foods. Cholesterol is needed for the body to work properly as it is useful in the production of hormones, vitamin D, and bile acids. Cholesterol is carried in the blood by proteins, by which proteins and cholesterol are combined and called lipoproteins. Two much cholesterol causes gradually buildup of fatty deposits in the blood vessels, leading to problems for blood flow, which could result in heart attack or stroke. There are two types of lipoproteins. Low density lipoprotein is so called bad cholesterol as it delivers cholesterol to the body. High density lipoprotein is good cholesterol as it removes cholesterol from the bloodstream.
Cholesterol is used in the preparation of liposome. It is used to control the functions of transporters and coordinating cell proteins present in plasma membrane. It acts as a part of cell membranes. It benefits in rapid diagnostics. It is a component of all biological membranes and inhibits basal channel activity in the brain.
Cholesterol, a major sterol is the precursor for steroid hormones, bile acid and vitamin in mammals and coordinates endocytosis. It complexes with protein to form lipoproteins for transport in blood. It exists either as high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or low-density lipoprotein (LDL). HDL also called good cholesterol has less lipid content. LDL or bad cholesterol has high lipid content. Statin inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase enzyme in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway controls elevated cholesterol levels in atherosclerosis and hypercholesterolemia. Low levels of cholesterol results in hypothyroidism, familial hypobetalipoproteinemia and liver disease. Imbalance of cholesterol homeostasis and intracellular cholesterol levels play a key role in cancer development. High cholesterol levels favor breast cancer progression.
Cholesterol, water-permeable lipid
Water-permeable lipid and major component of all biological membranes
Water-permeable lipid and major component of all biological membranes. Distributed in body tissues, especially the brain and spinal cord. Inhibits basal channel activity in the brain. Use as emulsifying agent and liposome preparations. Active in vivo and in vitro.
