Tetracycline hydrochloride belongs to a family of broad-spectrum antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis in bacteria by blocking the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the bacterial ribosome and has been used in a variety of dental studies. In Tick-Borne Encephalitis virus (TBEV) studies, Tetracycline hydrochloride increased the concentrations of sIL-6R, IL-1RA, sTNFR1 and decreased the levels of TNF-α. Studies show that Tetracycline hydrochloride can induce cold shock response and enhance expression of P450s proteins. Compounds such as Tetracycline hydrochloride that both inhibit protein synthesis and induce a cold shock response, could potentially act as protein synthesis enhancers under determined conditions. In cell biology, Tetracycline hydrochloride is commonly used as a selective agent in cell culture systems.

Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that prevents bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis. It binds to a single site in the 30S ribosomal subunit which prevents attachment of aminoacyl tRNA to the ribosomal acceptor site. It is used in cell biology as a selective agent in cell culture systems. Tetracycline is toxic to prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and selects for cells harboring the bacterial tetR gene, which are resistant to the antibiotic.  It has been used in studies of multidrug resistance and potential side effects including acute pancreatitis.
