β-Carotene is an organic, strongly colored red-orange pigment abundant in plants and fruits. It is a member of the carotenes, which are terpenoids (isoprenoids), synthesized biochemically from eight isoprene units and thus having 40 carbons. Among the carotenes, β-carotene is distinguished by having beta-rings at both ends of the molecule. β-Carotene is biosynthesized from geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate.
In nature, β-carotene is a precursor (inactive form) to vitamin A via the action of beta-carotene 15,15'-monooxygenase.
Isolation of β-carotene from fruits abundant in carotenoids is commonly done using column chromatography. It can also be extracted from the beta-carotene rich algae, Dunaliella salina. The separation of β-carotene from the mixture of other carotenoids is based on the polarity of a compound. β-Carotene is a non-polar compound, so it is separated with a non-polar solvent such as hexane. Being highly conjugated, it is deeply colored, and as a hydrocarbon lacking functional groups, it is very lipophilic.
Applications:
Beta Carotene can be used as feed additive.
Beta-carotene is an important precursor for utilizing vitamin A in poultry. Research shows that beta-carotene has a positive effect on the fertility of male and female cattle. Lack of beta-carotene can lead to fertility problems.
Role in dairy cattle
Supply of beta-carotene depends on the feeding type and typically is subject to significant fluctuations over the course of the year. Green fodder provides most beta-carotene for dairy cows. Letting cows out to pasture provides an excellent supply, for example. In addition to fresh grass, high-quality grass silage also provides adequate amounts of beta-carotene. In contrast, deficiencies occur more frequently when corn silage or spent grains make up a significant part of the forage. With a longer storage period, the content in the preserved feed also decreases significantly. This can cause problems with regard to supplying the dairy cow with beta-carotene, especially in the winter months.
Literature shows that beta-carotene has a positive effect on the fertility of male and female cattle. Comparable investigations exist for other animal species such as breeding mares, sows, and rabbits. Positive effects on the immune system and defense against infectious diseases in young animals were also observed.
Role in Poultry
Beta-carotene has a provitamin A activity of up to 2:1 in poultry and rats. For other species the exchange rate is lower. It depends not only on the animal species but also on the vitamin A content of the ration.
