Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester is the phenethyl alcohol ester of caffeic acid and a bioactive component of honeybee hive propolis, with antineoplastic, cytoprotective and immunomodulating activities. Upon administration, caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) inhibits the activation of nuclear transcription factor NF-kappa B and may suppress p70S6K and Akt-driven signaling pathways. In addition, CAPE inhibits PDGF-induced proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells through the activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1alpha and subsequent induction of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1).

1. Boosting athletic performance: A small study was performed to see if caffeic acid could help competitive athletes during prolonged periods of endurance exercise. The study used caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), a caffeic acid derivative.

2. Preventing diabetes:  caffeic acid was able to significantly reduce blood sugar levels in mice with diabetes compared to a control group. More research in humans is needed.

3. Reducing cancer risk: Studies have suggested that daily coffee intake, including decaffeinated coffee, is associated with a reduced incidence of colon and rectal cancer. Researchers think that these effects are attributed to polyphenol compounds, like caffeic acid.

4. Anti-aging: Due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, caffeic acid is often found in skin care regimens. Studies show promising results.

5. Treating HIV: Caffeic acid and its derivatives have been shown to inhibit the virus known as HIV.
