Details:

Naphthol is a compound formed when a hydrogen atom in a naphthalene ring is replaced by a hydroxyl group. There are two isomers, α- and β -naphthol, also known as 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol. The molecular formula is C10H7OH, and the structural formula is shown in the figure respectively. They're all white crystals. The α -isomer is acicular crystal, melting point 96℃, relative density 1.099(99/4℃). It can evaporate with water vapor or sublimate. β -isomers are rhombic crystals, melting point 123 ~ 124℃, density 1.28 g/cm 3(20℃). Both are difficult to dissolve in water, soluble in ethanol, benzene Chemicalbook, chloroform and other organic solvents. Dissolve in sodium hydroxide solution to generate corresponding naphthol sodium salt. In the ferric chloride aqueous solution, color reaction occurs, α -isomer is purple, β -isomer is green. Naphthalene can be first sulfonated at different temperatures, such as at about 60℃ and concentrated sulfuric acid reaction is mainly α -naphthalene sulfonic acid, reaction at 160℃ is mainly β -naphthalene sulfonic acid; Then they are respectively with sodium hydroxide eutectic naphthol sodium salt, the final acidification and prepared. They have combustion and irritation, inhalation of large amounts of naphthol dust or steam can lead to poisoning, symptoms of convulsion, vomiting, coma and so on.
