Estrone, also known as estrogen ketone, is a white crystalline powder, soluble in ethanol, insoluble in water. It is isolated from the urine of pregnant women or from the ovaries of livestock. It is the original hormone secreted by the ovaries of female animals and has been used clinically. It is an important pharmaceutical intermediate and can be used to synthesize derivatives of ethinyl estradiol or estradiol. Estrone (or estrone, estrogen ketone) is a weaker female steroid sex hormone, one of the three main endogenous estrogens, the other two being estradiol and estriol. The biosynthesis of estrogens such as estrone starts from cholesterol, most of which are secreted by the gonads, and a small part is the conversion of androgens from the adrenal glands by adipose tissue. Both estrone and estriol have little activity relative to estradiol. Estrone is converted to estradiol and is the main metabolic precursor of estradiol.
