Animal studies have shown that P21 increases levels of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), promotes neurogenesis (neurogenesis) in Alzheimer's disease, and inhibits the formation of amyloid plaques and tau protein. BDNF is involved not only in enhancing neurogenesis, but also in downregulation of certain enzymes involved in the formation of tau and amyloid plaques in the Alzheimer's disease brain.
