Streptomycin sulfate is the sulfate form of streptomycin, an antibiotic produced by the actinomycetes Streptomyces griseus in soil. Streptomycin is the first chemotherapeutic drug that has proven curative effect on tuberculosis. This product must be injected intramuscularly, so its long-term application is restricted. Streptomycin is the most effective and least toxic antibiotic available for parenteral administration from Streptomyces. This product is a bactericide, which may be effective because of its direct effect on bacterial ribosomes and inhibition of protein synthesis, mainly acting on extracellular (including intracavitary) Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Streptomycin sulfate has a strong antibacterial effect on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but not on most gram-positive cocci (such as various streptococci) and bacilli (such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, anaerobic bacteria), and is not strong on many Gram-positive bacteria. Negative bacilli have strong antibacterial effect. This product is effective against all kinds of skin tuberculosis. It has the effect of inhibiting the reproduction of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the production of toxins. At high concentration (>0.4μg/mL), it has bactericidal effect. The resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to streptomycin develops rapidly, and it should be used in combination with other anti-tuberculosis drugs. Combination of streptomycin sulfate and isoniazid, another highly effective bactericide that has been approved for parenteral application, can immediately produce significant curative effects on susceptible bacteria, and in critical cases, it can often be revived. Streptomycin sulfate is most effective during the first few weeks or months of treatment.
