Caprolactam (CPL) is the lactam of 6-aminocaproic acid (ε-aminocaproic acid), and can also be regarded as the cyclic amide of caproic acid. Caprolactam is mainly used as a monomer to prepare nylon 6. It can be prepared by oxime reaction of cyclohexanone with hydroxylamine sulfate, and then by Beckmann rearrangement reaction. Caprolactam is irritating and toxic when ingested, inhaled or in contact with skin.
