Stability
1. As a combustible substance, it should be kept away from ignition sources and strong oxidizing agents. 2. Chemical properties: Ethyl lactate is soluble in water, but can be decomposed by water, and the hydrolysis rate is slower than methyl lactate. Ethyl lactate containing water liberates lactic acid and ethanol during heating. Ethyl lactate contains asymmetric carbon atoms and therefore has two optical isomers. During storage in a vacuum dryer, bimolecular condensation occurs to produce lactide. Ethyl lactate is heated to 200-300 ℃ in the presence of a catalyst, or oxidized with air under light to undergo dehydrogenation reaction to produce ethyl pyruvate. When the vapor of ethyl lactate is passed through heated phosphorus pentoxide with oxygen, ethyl pyruvate is also generated.
When ethyl lactate is heated, it undergoes pyrolysis to produce acetaldehyde, carbon monoxide, and ethanol. Heating in the presence of ammonia generates lactic acid amide and ethanol. Condensation in the presence of sulfuric acid produces polymer compounds.
