Amoxicillin Trihydrate is a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic belonging to the penicillin class. It is the trihydrate form of amoxicillin, meaning three water molecules are associated with each amoxicillin molecule, enhancing its stability for pharmaceutical use.
Mechanism: Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death.
Spectrum: Effective against Gram-positive bacteria (e.g., Streptococcus, Staphylococcus) and some Gram-negative bacteria (e.g., E. coli, Haemophilus influenzae).
Treats infections like respiratory (pneumonia, sinusitis), ear/nose/throat (otitis media, tonsillitis), urinary tract (cystitis), and skin infections.
Often combined with clavulanic acid (e.g., Augmentin®) to combat beta-lactamase-producing resistant bacteria.
Adults: 250–500 mg every 8 hours or 875 mg every 12 hours (oral).
Children: 20–90 mg/kg/day, divided into 2–3 doses.
Common: Nausea, diarrhea, rash.
Severe (rare): Anaphylaxis (penicillin allergy), pseudomembranous colitis.
Contraindicated in penicillin/cephalosporin allergies.
Complete full course to prevent antibiotic resistance.
Store tablets/capsules at room temperature.
Reconstituted suspensions: Refrigerate and use within 7–14 days.
A first-line antibiotic for mild-to-moderate infections, but requires caution in allergic patients and adherence to prescribed regimens.
