Overview
In the commonly available molecular structure of hyaluronic acid, the presence of carboxyl groups imparts a negative charge, while the surface of human skin and hair carries a negative charge as well. Therefore, unmodified hyaluronic acid is not easily adsorbed by the skin and hair.
To address this issue, researchers have studied the cationization of sodium hyaluronate, giving it a positive charge. This resolves the problem of incompatibility between the anionic and cationic components of sodium hyaluronate, allowing it to be compatible with cationic, nonionic, anionic, and amphoteric systems.
The attraction between positive and negative charges enables it to adhere well to the surface of hair and skin, remaining resistant to rinsing while maintaining its moisturizing properties.
