LCZ696 is a drug developed by Novartis to treat heart failure, a life-threatening debilitating disease in which the heart cannot pump enough blood to supply the body, and symptoms such as dyspnea, fatigue and fluid retention can appear slowly and gradually worsen, significantly affecting quality of life.

LCZ696 is a dual-acting angiotensin receptor enkephalase inhibitor with a unique mode of action that is believed to reduce strain in failing hearts. LCZ696 enhances the body's natural defense against heart failure, while increasing levels of natriuretic peptides and other endogenous vasoactive peptides and inhibiting the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). LCZ696 combines Novartis' high blood pressure drug Diovan (commonly known as valsartan) with the experimental drug AHU-377. AHU377 blocks chemicalbooks that threaten the mechanism of action of two peptides responsible for lowering blood pressure, while Diovan improves vasodilation and stimulates the body to excrete sodium and water. Cardiovascular drugs have a very high safety threshold, and LCZ696 even showed a higher safety than conventional drugs. Previously, Novartis's vigorously developed cardiovascular drug serelaxin was rejected by the FDA and the European Union because of safety issues, which is undoubtedly a heavy blow to Novartis.
