Humanin is a 24-amino acid anti-apoptotic peptide that is a Bax inhibitor. Humanin blocks the translocation of Bax from the cytosol to the mitochondria, blocking the transition of Bax from an inactive conformation to an active conformation. Humanin is a mitochondrial-associated peptide that has neuroprotective effects against AD-related neurotoxicity. Humanin also improves overall insulin sensitivity in animals. Humanin is associated with aging. Humanin analogs, in which serine at position 14 is replaced by glycine, are named HNG.
