N,N,N',N' -tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride, also known as tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine hydrochloride, can be used to identify gonococci. The principle is that gonococci has oxidase, and the oxygen ions produced by it can oxidize the oxidase reagent (N,N,N',N' -tetramethylp-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride) into quinone compounds, resulting in color reactions.
