Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate - Introduction

Potassium dihydrogen phosphate (chemical formula KH?PO?) is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and exhibits acidic properties. It has the following characteristics:

  1. Acidity: Potassium dihydrogen phosphate will partially dissociate in water to produce hydroxide ions (OH?), so the solution is acidic. (It should be noted that in fact, potassium dihydrogen phosphate in water will dissociate to produce hydrogen ions (H?), making the solution acidic. There is a misunderstanding in the original Chinese description here.)
  2. Laboratory reagent: Potassium dihydrogen phosphate is often used as a buffer, pH regulator, and phosphate catalyst in laboratories.

There are usually two common methods for preparing potassium dihydrogen phosphate:

  1. Neutralization reaction: React phosphoric acid (H?PO?) with potassium hydroxide (KOH) under appropriate conditions to obtain potassium dihydrogen phosphate.

  2. React potassium hydroxide with diammonium hydrogen phosphate: Reacting potassium hydroxide with diammonium hydrogen phosphate can yield potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and ammonia gas is generated simultaneously.

  3. Avoid contact with strong oxidants: Potassium dihydrogen phosphate can react with strong oxidants (such as potassium permanganate) to produce combustible materials.

  4. Wear personal protective equipment: When handling potassium dihydrogen phosphate, protective goggles, gloves, and appropriate protective clothing should be worn.

  5. Avoid inhalation or skin contact: Potassium dihydrogen phosphate is irritating, and one should avoid inhaling its dust or allowing it to come into contact with the skin.

  6. Storage precautions: Potassium dihydrogen phosphate should be stored in a dry and well-ventilated place, and keep it away from flammable substances.

When using and storing potassium dihydrogen phosphate, please follow the safety operating procedures for chemicals and take personal protective measures according to the actual situation.
