Ectoine, with the formula 2-methyl-1,4,5,6, -tetrahydropyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid, also known as tetrahydropyrimidine, is a new amino acid derivative of a water-soluble zwitterion discovered in 1985. In 1985 Galinskiwas the first to identify and isolate ectoine in halophilic bacteria by NMR and mass spectrometry. At high salt concentrations, Ectoine accumulates in large quantities in some halophilic bacteria as a permeable compensation solute to resist changes in the high osmotic pressure of the external environment.
Ectoine is a natural and effective active ingredient used in cosmetics due to its extensive cellular protection properties. It is highly valued for its moisturizing, antioxidant, photoaging protection, and sunscreen effects, making it suitable for a wide range of skincare products
Ectoine significantly enhances skin hydration by binding and structuring free water within cells.
A single molecule of ectoine can hold four to five water molecules, providing more effective moisturization compared to glycerin.
Studies have shown that Ectoine can continually improve skin moisture retention over time, with hydration levels remaining higher than the control group even after stopping application.
Clinical trials indicate that ectoine helps preserve the natural antioxidant capacity of cells as they age, offering a defense against oxidative stress.
Ectoine protects these cells from UV-induced reduction, helping the skin's immune system to function optimally.
Ectoine is effective in protecting against UVA-induced photoaging.
UVA, with a wavelength range of 320-400 nm, is constant in sunlight exposure throughout the year, irrespective of latitude
or weather, leading to a cumulative effect on skin aging. Ectoine offers daily defense against this accumulation, helping to maintain youthful skin appearance.
