This paper examines the performance of self-consolidating concrete incorporating volcanic materials in a sodium sulfate environment. The volcanic materials used as a cement replacement of binary and ternary concrete mixtures in this research were Tolima, Puracé and Boyacá. The results were compared to those of standard SCC. The physical properties (density, absorption and porosity) and sorptivity of water were determined. The degree of sulfate attack was evaluated using dimensional variation, visual examination and compressive strength change of SCC specimens immersed in two exposure media (reference medium and sodium sulfate solution (5% Na2SO4)) for different ages exposure. The microstructure was studied using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) coupled to EDS and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis. This paper shows that the use of inert (Tolima) and pozzolanic (Puracé and Boyacá) volcanic materials results in SCCs with good sodium sulfate resistance.
