We report the formation of POTASSIUM METHOXIDE (cas 100365-72-8) from the reaction of methanol with a monolayer of potassium adsorbed on a Ru(001) surface. The vibrational spectrum of KOCH3 is characterized by high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy with a K-O stretch at 180 cm−1, a C-O stretch at 1050 cm−1 and C-H stretching vibrations between 2780 and 2960 cm−1. Potassium methoxide is formed at 200 K and decomposes at 450 K to carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
