2-amino-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)N-[(1E)-(2-hydroxyphenyl)methylene]propanehydrazide (amph, LH2) and Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized based on the elemental analyses, molar conductance, TGA, magnetic susceptibility, 1H and 13C NMR, UV–Vis, IR, EPR and mass spectroscopic, cyclic voltammetric, SEM, TEM and powder XRD data. Formation of complexes having 1:1 metal:ligand stoichiometry was envisaged from elemental and TG studies. On the basis of the magnetic and spectral studies, distorted octahedral geometry had been assigned for all the complexes in which the ligand acted as a tridentate species bonding through the carbonyl-O, azomethine-N and phenolate/phenolic-O. The molecular geometries of the metal complexes were also optimized using the hybrid functional B3LYP and the segmented all-electron relativistically contracted def2-SVP as the basis set for the DFT calculations. The ligand and all the complexes showed irreversible redox behavior. The complexes were observed to bind CT-DNA through intercalative mode. The ligand was active against bacterial strains Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli while the complexes would exhibit selectiveness in their activities.
