The early stages of the polymerisation of N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide monomer in dilute aqueous solutions were studied by means of pulse radiolysis technique. The reactivity of the basic products of water radiolysis: OH radicals and hydrated electrons with the monomer were found to be comparable, as their rate constants were equal ∼1.4×1010 dm3 mol−1 s−1. The OH radicals add to double bonds of the examined compound in β-position giving adducts of absorption with the maximum located at 395 nm. The adducts decay with the first-order rate constant k=(1.11±0.13)×105 s−1. The reactions of the H and the transient species are strikingly similar to those of the OH radicals. The spectra of the hydrated electron adducts are pH dependent. The adducts at pH 10 are characterised by the maxima at 290 nm—intense and a weak one at 375 nm, whereas at pH=4 by the maxima at 280 and 375 nm. The eaq−-adducts decay by complex kinetics, consisting of a fast and a slow part. The initial part of the decay was assessed to be slightly faster for radical anion compared to its protonated form.
