Infrared and Raman spectra of oriented single crystals of dichloro(ethylenediamine)palladium (II), [Pd(en)Cl2], have been investigated. The application of polarized light allowed a determination of the symmetry species of almost all i.r. active bands. Cooling the samples to liquid nitrogen temperature helped to resolve neighbouring far i.r. bands. Raman spectra of powder samples of the above complex and the corresponding platinum complex have been obtained. Single crystal Raman spectra were of minor value because of tendencies to scrambling of the polarized laser light. Spectral bands were assigned to group vibrations, although this approximation in the far i.r. range seems too rough to account for modes even as simple as PdCl stretchings.
