The photochemical rearrangement of 2,3-disubstituted quinoxaline-1,4-dioxides to 1,3-disubstituted benzimidazolones has been examined. Evidence against the previously reported mechanism is offered, and an alternative mechanism suggested. The scope of the reaction is increased to include new types. Furthermore, a new mode of rearrangement is recognized.
