It has been found that the olfactory properties of a range of essential oils and isolates may be improved by small doses of radiation. At the dose most favourable to the process, no changes in the physical or chemical properties of the irradiated oils can be detected. In the case of Brazilian peppermint oil very high doses of electron or γ-radiation result in the destruction of camphene. Similar effects are noted with ultraviolet irradiation, but the disappearance of camphene is accompanied by the appearance of a new product. This product has been tentatively identified on chromatographic evidence as tricyclene, an intermediate previously encountered in the hydration and dehydration reactions involving camphene.
