10,10-Dimethylanthrone (III), dibenzosuberone (IV) and benzophenone show very similar photochemical behaviour. Their reactivity towards hydrogen donors is about the same of III and benzophenone and one order of magnitude lower for IV: for example the rate constants for 2-propanol quenching in benzene are 4.4 × 106 M−1 s−1, 3.2 × 106 M−1 s−1 and 3.0 × 105 M−1 s−1 respectively. Triplet energies have been measured in an EPA glass at 77 K and are 71.9 kcal mol−1, 69.1 kcal mol−1 and 66.2 kcal mol−1 for III, benzophenone and IV respectively. The photochemistry of III is dramatically different from that of anthrone as a result of the fact that substitution at the 10-position prevents photoenolization and reactive selfquenching in the case of III.
