The p-bromophenyl β-glycosides of cellobiose, lactose, and maltose have been prepared via their hepta-O-acetyl derivatives, by an adaptation of Griebel and Helferich's method1 for the preparation of phenyl β-lactoside. In preliminary experiments, it was found that this version of the Koenigs-Knorr reaction gave better results in the synthesis of aryl glycosides of disaccharides than the method outlined by Rosenmund and Güssow2 for the synthesis of aryl glycosides of monosaccharides
