Engineering thermoplastics with cellulosic fibers are in the focus because of the higher strength and heat deflection temperature but processing is still challenging. Therefore, in this investigation polybutylenterephthalat (PBT) and bio-based polytrimethylentherephthalat (PTT) was used as a polymer matrix. Composites with various contents of regenerated cellulose fibers and glass fibers were manufactured with a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. Maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (MAPE) was used as an additive to improve the mechanical properties and the processing. Tensile and Charpy impact tests were carried out to characterize the mechanical properties. Dynamic image analysis and SEM were done to evaluate the morphology. Due to their longer fiber and ductility, cellulose fiber composites show a significant increase in impact properties compared to their glass fiber reinforced counterparts. Supplementary, composites with MAPE show an additional improvement of the Charpy impact strength for the composites with regenerated cellulose fibers and a brighter color.
