Three polyethylenes (HDPE, LDPE and LLDPE) have been irradiated with UV light, as a pre-step for hydroperoxide production, before a bulk grafting reaction with maleic anhydride (MAH). The method was compared with a traditional grafting procedure using peroxides. The grafting reaction was followed by FTIR and gel percentage and the grafting degree evaluated by means of titration; LDPE showed the highest grafting values. The effect of grafting on the thermal properties of polyethylenes was observed by DSC, using heating and cooling thermograms; HDPE presented the most significant changes in fusion peaks, indicating differences in the crystallisation process after the grafting reaction. The latter was confirmed by SEM and NMR spectroscopy, showing the succinic anhydride rings attached to the polyethylene chains.
