SummaryA Gram-positive sporeforming bacterium isolated from the rumen of sheep in Venezuela is described. The isolated strain (162) degraded the toxic amino acid mimosine, a component of the forage legume Leucaena. Strain 162 also degraded two products of mimosine metabolism, 3(hydroxy)-4-(1H)-pyridone and 2,3 dihydroxypyridine. Dihydroxyphenylalanine was also degraded, but 3 hydroxypyridine and catechol were not. Glucose, maltose and trehalose were fermented and supported growth. The major products were acetate, butyrate and ethanol, with traces of propionate, isobutyrate, isovalerate, valerate and hydrogen. Phytone stimulated growth, the optimal temperature for which was 38°C. The mol% G plus C in the DNA was 23. The strain appears to be a representative of a previously unrecognised species of the genus Clostridium.
