The subchronic toxicity of photodieldrin, a photodecomposition product of dieldrin which is found as a residue on certain agricultural commodities treated with dieldrin, was investigated in a 90-day feeding study in the rat. Comparison of the toxic potential of photodieldrin and dieldrin showed that, although photodieldrin was more acutely toxic, there were essentially no differences between the compounds in terms of the other parameters investigated. A slight, insignificant increase in liver weight at the lowest dose fed was the most notable effect produced by photodieldrin. Photodieldrin concentrated in fat to a lesser extent than dieldrin. At the same dietary intake the concentrations of dieldrin in fat of males were 4 times and in females from 5 to 10 times greater than the concentrations of photodieldrin. Increased cytochrome P-450 content and aniline hydroxylase activity were evident after 90-day feeding of either compound at levels of 5 ppm and above. Because of similar subchronic effects, negligible quantities in food, decreased fat storage potential, and rapid mobilization, it may be assumed that photodieldrin does not increase the toxicologic significance of dieldrin residues.
