AMMONIUM PENTABORATE (cas 12007-89-5) (APB) is a well-known nonlinear optical material. To modify and engineer the properties of APB crystals, chalcogenide ZnS nano-particles were added. ZnS nano-particles were synthesised by a co-precipitation method followed by microwave irradiation. Pure and ZnS-added APB crystals were grown by a slow solvent evaporation method. To increase the solubility of ZnS in water, nano-particles were used. To solutions of pure APB, different concentrations of ZnS were added. Powder X-ray diffraction confirmed that both pure and ZnS-added APB crystals have an orthorhombic structure. Atomic absorption spectroscopy confirmed the presence of zinc. The presence of various functional groups was identified Fourier transform IR spectra of pure and ZnS-added APB. The Fourier transform IR spectra of ZnS-added APB revealed the presence of SH asymmetric stretching vibration. Thermogravimetric analysis suggested that ZnS-added APB crystals exhibit slightly lower thermal stability in comparison with pure APB crystals. Impedance spectroscopy was performed at room temperature in the 100 Hz to 1 MHz frequency range, and the complex impedance and modulus plots were drawn. A dielectric study was also performed in this frequency range. Jonscher's power law was applied to AC conductivity data. A study using the Kurtz and Perry powder technique indicated that all crystals exhibit nonlinear optical properties with differing second harmonic generation efficiency.
