A simple equation does not describe the reaction of samarium sesquioxide and boron, since the products vary with both temperature and length of time at temperature. Metals such as molybdenum and tungsten react with samarium boride phases at elevated temperatures forming delta molybdenum boride and tungsten diboride, respectively, and liberate gaseous samarium. Tetraboride specimens of volatile lanthanide elements may of prepared free of the hexaboride by heating the elements in a bomb.
