From analysing the electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra and from the heat capacity at low temperatures it was concluded that the. transition from metal to semiconductor behaviour in some compounds is connected with the formation of s states. The EPR spectrum in SmB6 can be due either to the formation of 4f7 states within the samarium or to the fact that the standard bonding condition is not realized in the formation of f5d localized states; if localized states are formed, it is better to consider the f5 + e state rather than the f 5d state as the localized electron has the properties of a state with L = 0 and produces a signal within the EPR spectra with g g ≈ 2.
