Fluorescence quantum yields and time-correlated lifetimes for the exciplex-forming molecule 6-(2',3'-butenyloxy)methyl-1-cyanonaphthalene (1) have been obtained in ethyl acetate in the temperature range 0–40°C. Molecular mechanics and extended Hückel calculations have been used to probe conformational minima on the ground-state surface of 1. We conclude that two channels for exciplex formation are possible: (a) rapid static quenching from a ground-state conformer of 1 in which the olefin and aromatic groups are in proximity; (b) a slower, conventional monomer-exciplex dynamics scheme originating from extended conformation of 1.
